A pontoon classroom tailored towards Waterford-area business leaders was hosted Aug. 8 by the Waterford Waterway Management District (WWMD) Marketing Committee and the Waterford Chamber of Commerce.
The crowd enjoyed an afternoon tour on a pontoon boat, cruising the Fox River water impoundment for more than an hour.
This year’s event was a collaborative effort intended to raise awareness and provide local business leaders with information about the Fox River.
During the cruise, Ted Derse (former WWMD Chairman) offered a historical narrative that included the ecological effects of the 2008 flood, which increased silt and the growth of aquatic invasive and native species in the waterway.
WWMD Commissioner Don Baron provided a summary of WWMD accomplishments since its origin in 2003. Tom Ditscheit, Town of Waterford Chief of Police, discussed boating safety and other police concerns specific to the waterway.
Attendees enjoyed a lunch of pizza and salad, which was served at Doc’s on the Fox restaurant; river tour transportation was provided by Starks Ark.
About 40 local leaders attended, including Waterford Town Chairman Tom Hincz, Village President Tom Roanhouse, Jim D’Antuono of the state Department of Natural Resources Al Sikora, president of the Southeast Wisconsin Fox River Commission.
WWMD has been involved in an Eco-System Restoration and preservation since its inception in 2003. Its annual meeting will be held Saturday, Sept. 21 and again provide riparian owners with a public outreach presentation.
