With the not-too-distant reconstruction of highways 83 and 20 being planned by state officials, Village of Waterford leaders are involved in the process of planning for an enhanced park that could be located near the corridor and constructed in conjunction with the highway work.

The proposed green space is along North Second Street and behind a business along East Main Street.

Members of the Village Board have been discussing options for the effort, which is in the preliminary stages. The site could also include a river walk along the Fox River and a canoe and boat launch.

Additionally, a more efficient parking lot is eyed for the site, which would include off-street parking and other amenities.

Several village organizations – including leaders of the downtown Heritage District – are involved in the planning process.

Tina Chitwood of the nonprofit group Absolutely Waterford has been appointed by the board to assist in planning the new effort.

Village President Tom Roanhouse said an overarching goal behind the planning work in progress is to provide a green space that can be enjoyed by all members of the community.

“If we dress it up, and gingerbread up the place … everyone should be able to use it,” Roanhouse said.

The highways 83/20 project is under the auspices of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and includes a reconstruction of Highway 20 from Buena Park Road to Milwaukee Avenue, including a reconstruction of East Main Street from First to Milwaukee streets.

Construction is planned for 2018.
