A newspaper delivery driver helped rescue a young woman she saw frantically running around with a baby at about 3:30 a.m., July 6, in Rochester.

Charged in the ensuing investigation with multiple criminal counts is Telesforo Perez, of South Front Street, Rochester.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Racine County Circuit Court:

The newspaper driver stopped and let the running woman into her delivery truck, then drove away to safety by the Rochester library, where she called authorities.

A sheriff’s department deputy responded and interviewed the young woman, who was shoeless, crying and holding her one-year-old son.

She said that Perez, the child’s father, had been drinking and arguing with their kids. She confronted him and Perez choked her, throwing her to the ground.

She said she fought Perez off, then grabbed the baby and fled the residence. She said Perez was following her and she had seen him hiding behind his car and did not know what to do.

The deputy reported red marks on the left side of the victim’s neck, and a small laceration under her ear.

Officers accompanied the woman to the residence, where they found Perez sleeping in the basement.

He admitted to having an altercation with the victim, but claimed she was the aggressor. He admitted to holding down the victim with his left forearm on her throat for 10-15 seconds, trying to calm her down.

Police noted a cut on the top of the knuckle on his left hand, as well as scratches to an ear, his chin and his chest.

He is charged with felony strangulation and suffocation; and misdemeanor counts of battery and disorderly conduct, both with domestic abuse assessments.

Perez made an initial appearance in court July 8, at which time probable cause was found that he had committed the crimes with which he is charged.

A $1,000 cash bond was set and met. He is next scheduled in court July 17 for a preliminary hearing, when a judge can decide whether the case should proceed to trial.
