The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has updated its Highway 164 project website to include a “Traffic Impacts” section, according to Traci Gengler, Project Manager for the Highway 164 work.

To link to the general STH 164 website, she suggests going online to www.dot.wisconsin.gov/projects/seregion/1643643/index.htm (as an alternative, search WisDOT, then go to “Plans,” “Southeast,” and “WIS 164 (Tichigan – Big Bend).”

Under “Traffic Impacts,” click on the link to the WisDOT File Transfer Protocol server site for the most up-to-date traffic information:

Local traffic only

Gengler, in a project update dated June 17, warns that anyone who doesn’t have to drive on Highway 164, shouldn’t.

Residents, customers and employees should only travel on Highway164 in order to get to the nearest side road and then find alternate routes to minimize driving through the construction zone.

“This allows a contractor to get work done faster and reduces driver frustration/impatience as well as reducing the risks of vehicle damage within the work zone,” Gengler explained via email.

“No one should be driving all the way through three construction projects to I-43,” she added. “Please look for alternate routes.

Yield to dump trucks

Drivers must yield to dump trucks hauling material to and from the work area, which are mainly coming to and from the south, she noted.

“With the road closed, they have the right-of-way and may need to avoid soft areas along the edges of the roadway by driving down the center of the road where the road is a more stable area,” Gengler explained.

“Slow down and move over to allow them through.

Helpful advice

For people living in the subdivisions connected by Sandy and Dorie lanes, the contractor will always keep one of those two roadways open, Gengler said, adding: Watch for traffic updates coming soon on the WisDOT website.

Gengler suggested residents remember that the roadway was in poor condition, in desperate need of repair and will be nice to drive on for many years once the project is complete this winter.
