The long and winding road to reconstructing state Highway 164 will take a new twist and turn Monday, as the southern portion of this important local roadway will be closed within the Town of Waterford.
At a Board meeting held Aug. 12, Town Chairman Tom Hincz said the southerly portion will be closed for at least 42 days – and possibly as long as 52 days.
“(Construction crews) will be working around the clock, and that means working 24/7, nights and days,” Hincz noted.
Hincz admitted he is concerned about the prospect of noise as a problem, but said he sees validity in the 24/7 proposal, since the overall project has met a few delays this construction season because of weather.
“I am concerned noise could be a problem, but I say we give it a shot,” he added. “If we do start getting complaints, we can always revisit it.”
Ken Hinz, who heads the town’s Department of Public Works, noted the 24/7 scenario is only planned for a portion of the southerly construction cycle. Hinz said it has been planned for 23 days.
In the coming weeks ahead, a number of new projects associated with the Highway 164 work will take place, including marsh excavation.
As part of the work, barricades and signs are being placed along Loomis Road to warn motorists of the large number of construction vehicles that will be traveling between Beach Drive and East River Bay Road.
In recent weeks, construction crews also have been paving asphalt from County Line Road to Beach Drive, and ditch grading has been taking place from Beach Drive to state Highway 36.
The project involves the total reconstruction of Highway 164, and is scheduled to be completed this fall. The state has promised to provide current, weekly updates about the construction, which are then posted on the town’s website, www.tn.waterford.wi.gov.
