Local volunteers are stepping up to climb for air

Local volunteers were among those participating in the 2013 Fight for Air Climb – Anthem Firefighters Challenge that took place March 23 at the U.S. Bank Center in downtown Milwaukee.

The climb raised funds to be donated to the American Lung Association.

Scene of the action that day in Milwaukee was the U.S. Bank Center and its 47 floors with 94 flights of stairs.

“That’s a total of 1,034 steps!” said Lisa Jeschke, a Town of Waterford Board supervisor who joined the climb, speaking from personal experience.

Local teams on the Fight for Air Climb included the five-member Tichigan Fire and Rescue, five-member Tichigan Volunteer Fire Co. and six-member Raymond Fire and Rescue teams.

“This was a unique and difficult challenge in full fire clothing and gear totaling approximately 50 pounds,” noted Jeschke.

She called the experience both an honor and a privilege “to climb with these volunteers who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice daily, putting themselves in harms way for our safety.”
