Members of the Eco-System Restoration Committee within the Waterford Waterway Management District (WWMD) recently announced a timeline for the next phase of a possible sediment dredging project that is in the works.

The Committee currently is in the process of obtaining the proper permits from the state Department of Natural Resources, and the effort is expected to continue through November.

From now through November, potential management sites will be eyed throughout WWMD’s bodies of water for the dredging work. A community outreach meeting is planned in September.

WWMD Commissioner John Bostrom is leading the effort. He said the goal is to begin the next stage of dredging work next May with plans of continuing into 2015 and possibly 2016.

“The project could be completed in phases over two to three years,” Bostrom explained at the group’s June 27 meeting.

“Restrictions based on protection of aquatic habitat may limit dredging activities from early March to early May.”

Marketing

In other discussions held June 27, WWMD officials expressed interest into ways to ramp up the group’s marketing efforts.

From the upcoming Waterford Balloon Fest to the media, members briefly discussed efforts to increase marketing efforts.

The WWMD board expressed pleasure in a community outreach meeting that was held June 15 at Evergreen Elementary School. More than 100 attendees reportedly turned out for the event.

Commissioners expressed interest in different ways of sharing WWMD-related information with the public through a variety of methods. For example, the WWMD board is planning to man a booth during Balloon Fest on July 19-20.

“We’ll continue marketing ourselves to the media as well,” Commissioner Don Baron said.
