Village considers request for reserved public parking

The Village of Waterford could make parking accommodations for a recently opened college geared specifically toward people with autism.

Staff at the Wisconsin Independent Life College, 104B E. Main St., came before members of the Village Board’s Public Works Utilities Committee June 17 and discussed a request to reserve up to four parking spaces during regular business hours.

As proposed, four stalls near the college would be reserved for families of students between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.

Public Works Director Jeff Dolezal said he will forward the matter on to Village Attorney Marcy Hasenstab for review, who could recommend that an ordinance be adopted to reflect the request.

WILC, which is Wisconsin’s first college specifically geared toward people with autism, held an open house at its new Waterford facility last month.

  1. Silly…There is plenty of parking on Main Street and the side streets near the 100 blk of E. Main. Plus the public lot next to the fire station. I wish them all the success in their important mission, but they can walk a 1/2 block to the school.

  2. This is a terrible idea. There is plenty of parking now, at all times. If we begin to carve up the public lot there will not be. Unless this is because of a handicap or because of loading and unloading, there should be no reservations allowed. We’re not talking about having to park a block away – maybe having to park 20 feet further away. We should not be passing new laws, erecting new signs, having to enforce them and more.

Please don’t misinterpret this – I wholeheartedly support the college and their mission, and am very glad they are here. But setting this precedent is simply bad politicking.
