The state Department of Natural Resources has no money to help pay for a dredging project on the Waterford waterways, voters learned at the Sept. 21 annual meeting of the Waterford Waterway Management District (WWMD).
Craig Helker, a DNR water resource biologist who addressed the annual meeting, shared that funding information Saturday with those in attendance.
Electors later voted 68 to 42 to approve the district’s proposed 2014 budget and keep their annual assessment at $175. About $110 of the annual fee accounts for dredging project-related costs.
In an earlier vote, electors voted down, 60 to 22, a motion to increase the annual fee by $25.
Saturday’s annual WWMD meeting was held at Waterford High School and attended by about 125 people. The WWMD serves about 1,020 riparian owners whose properties lie along the Fox River, Buena Lake and Tichigan Lake. It has been in existence for about 10 years.
After the annual meeting, many gathered in the lobby outside the auditorium, where local and state experts were on hand, standing beside various exhibits and answering questions.Dredging, and its local costs, was the topic most often raised.
