Missing sign is straw that broke the camel’s back

Patricia and Gordon Hurley are on the lookout for a handcrafted sign proclaiming “Camelback Mountain” that’s been standing for 27 years at the entryway to homes in the Camelback Mountain Road area of Rochester.

The Hurleys are not alone in their quest to locate the missing sign.

The Racine County Sheriff’s Office is seeking tips to the whereabouts of the sign, which reportedly went missing between 11 p.m., Aug. 15 and 7 a.m., Aug. 16.

The heavy wooden sign, which stood a few feet off Highway W mounted on big posts, was built by the Hurleys years ago when homes in the Camelback area started being built.

Although she can’t find a picture of the sign, Patricia Hurley described it, from memory, as being about four feet by four feet in size, with a curved top and the words “Camelback Mountain” amid pictures of a sun, deer and shaded mountains.

Whoever took the sign must have a strong back, not to mention a determined work ethic, mused Patricia Hurley. “If only they would put all that energy to good use!” she said.

Anyone with information should contact the Sheriff’s Office at (262) 534-5166.

  1. Does Google Street View have a picture of the sign?

  2. Very Sad. My late wife would love to drive through your sub-division as it is beautiful and hope they find it and punish those responsible.
