Two at WHS named Kohl Award recipients
Two members of the Waterford High School community have been named recipients of 2014 Herb Kohl Foundation awards for students and teachers.
Student Sydney Lindner and Derek Machan, the WHS Director of Choral Activities and Music Theory, were selected for the $1,000 awards, given out this year to 100 teachers, their schools, and 187 graduating high school students.
• Machan is named a 2014 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Fellow. Fellowship recipients are chosen for their: superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students; ability to motivate others; and leadership and service within and outside the classroom, according to the selection committee with the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation.
• Lindner is awarded a 2014 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Excellence Scholarship. Winners of the award have: demonstrated academic excellence and high motivation to achieve; displayed a broad range of activity and leadership outside the academic setting; and shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond, according to the selection committee.
Both awards were presented April 5 by former U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl at 2014 Student and Teacher Recognition Luncheon in Janesville.
• In a related matter, the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) has announced Machan as a finalist for a 2014 People’s Choice Award. The People’s Choice winners will be announced April 27 at the 34th annual WAMI Awards Show at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton.
WAMI is a volunteer organization whose purpose is to educate and recognize the achievements and accomplishments of individuals in the Wisconsin music industry.
The group also utilizes its funds to provide a Youth Music Showcase and provide scholarships to students and emerging artists. For more details, go to www.wamimusic.com.
