Voters decide April 1 winners

By Patricia Bogumil

While many positions on the April 1 election ballot were uncontested, other races drew voters determined to make a selection from the candidate choices offered.

Results for contested races in the Waterford and Union Grove areas include:

Tom Hoffman (904 votes, 53 percent) bested Jordan Karweik (752, 42 percent) in a hotly contested battle for one open seat on the Waterford Graded School Board.

Karweik said via email Wednesday morning that it was exciting to see Waterford so enthusiastic about a school board election.

“Through the race I was able to meet a lot of caring people. Also, I was able to grow as a person and learn a lot from this experience.

“I would like to congratulate Tom Hoffman on the win and wish him the best of luck.”

Hoffman could not be reached for comment by press deadline.

Union Grove Union High School incumbent board member Diane Skewes (472 votes, 31 percent) and newcomer Randall Henderson (389, 25.6 percent) won election to the board. Incumbent Marcia Vlach Colsmith (298, 19.6 percent) was third.

      • Union Grove Village Board incumbent trustee Gordon Svendsen (211 votes, 56 percent) fended off a challenge from political newcomer Diane Bogard (157, 42 percent).

      • Plan commissioner Jan Alvey (423, 23 percent) will replace veteran supervisor Dale Gauerke (397, 21.7 percent) on the Waterford Town Board. Incumbent supervisor Tim Szeklinski (488, 26.7 percent) was the top vote-getter and retains his position on the board.

      • Waterford Village Board President Tom Roanhouse (509, 51.7 percent) bested Kansasville businessman Patrick Haley (353, 35.9 percent) for the Supervisor No. 18 spot on the Racine County Board. Roanhouse replaces veteran supervisor Gilbert Bakke, who has retired from the board.
