He enters November election unopposed
Muskego salesman Chuck Wichgers prevailed in Tuesday’s four-way Republican primary election for the 83rd Assembly District seat, which includes much of the Waterford area.
The winner likely replaces David Craig, who is seeking a state Senate seat, in the heavily Republican district following the November election. There is no declared Democratic candidate.
Wichgers garnered 4,074 votes (49 percent) to defeat Steve Whittow (2,812 votes; 34 percent), Karen Schuh (913; 11 percent) and Jordan Karweik (576; 7 percent), according to unofficial results.
Karweik, a Waterford resident and member of the Waterford Graded School District Board, polled much better in Racine County, finishing third, just behind Wichgers and Whittow with 25 percent of the vote.
Wichgers, a former City of Muskego alderman and Waukesha County Board member told the Waterford Post his goal is to hold the line on taxes and government.
“It’s going to be very difficult and it takes a special type of candidate to stand up against those in Madison who are looking to spend beyond our means,” he said prior to the election.
In other contested primaries for local voters, 1st District Congressman and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan easily defeated Republican challenger Paul Nehlen. In Racine County, Ryan garnered 83 percent of the vote compared to 14 percent for Nehlen, who ran on an ultra-conservative platform.
In the Democratic primary for U.S. Senator, Russ Feingold defeated a token challenge from Scott Harbach and will face incumbent Ron Johnson in the November election.
