As spring slips into summer, work on the Village of Waterford’s River East shoreline project along the Fox River is heating up.
Alongside the progress in work has come a series of changes and cost updates related to the work. The Village Board on Monday approved multiple change orders to the project, which were built into a contingency account.
Mark Kolczaski, an engineer with Baxter and Woodman, came before the board at this week’s meeting to discuss progress on the work and reasons behind the change orders.
One change order amounted to $15,350, while another totaled $586.
One reason for the changes, Kolczaski said, was the discovery of what he described as an “oily-type substance” near the site of utility-related construction work along the east side of Second Street.
“The soils were tested and found to be contaminated, but not hazardous, and required disposal at a licensed landfill,” Kolczaski said. “This work was not in the contract and is complete.”
Some of the other changes were infrastructure-related, and one had to do with the natural landscape at Ten Club Park.
“A large, 40-inch tree not shown on the drawings was found to be in conflict with the proposed storm sewer through the Ten Club Park parking lot,” Kolczaski said.
Work on River East began this spring and is expected to continue through October. The first leg of the work, which is underway, is occurring near North Division and East Division streets.
Village Administrator Rebecca Ewald said the municipality has taken steps to inform residents and other interested persons of road closures, parking lot availability and other related logistical issues.
