Man charged with OWI after driving wrong way down 36

A Menomonee Falls man has been charged with drunken driving after traveling the wrong way down Highway 36 in the Town of Norway.

Thomas Gerald Kringel, 40, was charged Jan. 30 in Racine County Circuit Court with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, fourth offense; and operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license.

According to the criminal complaint, an officer saw a vehicle driving the wrong way down Highway 36, a divided highway, after having seen the same vehicle leave Kelly’s Bleachers a couple of minutes earlier. When the officer activated the squad car’s emergency lights, the vehicle turned around to face the correct direction on Highway 36 and pulled over, according to the complaint.

When the officer told Kringel, the driver, he was being pulled over for traveling the wrong direction, he said, “I know. I know,” according to the complaint. Kringel admitted drinking at Kelly’s Bleachers, smelled like alcohol and had bloodshot and glassy eyes and slurred speech, the complaint states. Kringel showed signs of impairment on field sobriety tests and registered .163 on a preliminary breath test, according to the complaint.
