Alois ‘Al’ J. Schmitt CPCU, 93, Burlington, died Nov. 9, 2011, at Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington.
He was born June 23, 1918, in Burlington, to the late Alois Carl and Theresa Catherine (Barbian) Schmitt.
He graduated from St. Mary’s High School and has resided in Burlington since 1966. He proudly served in the United States Army, enlisting on March 24, 1941, and honorably discharged on Nov. 20, 1945. He served in the Headquarters Company-Infantry Replacement Training Center at Camp Roberts in California.
He married Margaret C. Yonk. She preceded him in death in 1995. He later married Alice (Walburg) Peterson. Together they made their home in Burlington.
He retired from Northwestern National Insurance Company, where he worked in Corporate Research and Development. He was a member of the Charter Property and Consultant Underwriters, Personal Property Committee ISO, Insurance Advertising Council, Technical Conference Committee and the Independent Insurance Agents of Wis. He was a former member and company rep for the Society of Insurance Research.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and the Washington Island Lions Club. He enjoyed reading, traveling, movies, golf and grilling out with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; children, Mary (Ivan) Hubbard, Burlington, Margaret (Russell) Kickbush, Milwaukee; stepchildren, Christian (Denise) Peterson, Mukwonago, Cheryl (Tony) Furlick, Milwaukee, Carlton (Carol) Peterson, Elroy, and Correne Wilson, Burlington; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home & Crematory, Burlington, is serving the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Catholic Central High School are suggested.
