CAROLYN L. DE GRAVE


Carolyn L. De Grave,  85, Burlington, died Friday, March 2, 2012, at Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington. She was born Sept. 20, 1926, in Burlington, to the late Albert and Freida (Wiemer) Pieters. She was a lifetime resident of Burlington and a graduate of St. Mary’s High School.

In January of 1947, she married Arthur R. De Grave. Following marriage they made their home in Burlington. He preceded her in death on Nov. 19, 1983.

She had worked as a health aide for the Burlington Public Schools. She was a longtime volunteer for Love Inc., as well as working part time as a manager in the office. She was a member of the BPW, St. Charles Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers at St. Charles Church and a Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed playing bridge and was an avid lover of outdoor activities, including cross country skiing, biking and gardening. She had a love for animals.

Survivors include her children, Peter (Ruth) De Grave, Burlington, Carol De Grave, Yakima, Wash., Gail (Gary) De Grave McMonagle, Orondo, Wash., Ellen (Bill Powers) De Grave, Cummington, Mass.; grandchildren, Leanne (David) Smith, Caledonia, Aaron De Grave, Burlington, Nicole (Simon Tilton) De Grave, Lake Geneva, Nathan McMonagle, Seattle, Wash., Matthew McMonagle, Seattle, and Nolan (Bailey Northcott) McMonagle, Kennewick, Wash.;  great-grandchildren, Jacob and Andrew Smith, Caledonia; brother, Donald (Betty) Pieters, De Pere; sister-in-law, Bea De Grave, Burlington; special friends, Deena Corey, Sandy Wagner, Dorothy Koldeway, Sue Kuta and Rick, Joan Zwiebel; nieces; nephews; other relatives and special friends.

She was further preceded in death by her brothers, William, Joseph, Richard and Bro. David Pieters.

Visitation is Friday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a funeral Mass at 1 p.m., at St. Charles Catholic Church, 440 Kendall St. The Rev. Steve Amann will officiate. Inurnment is in St. Charles Cemetery on Saturday, March 10, at 1 p.m. Schuette-Daniels Family Funeral Home, Burlington, is assisting the family.
