EDGAR (DAN) DANTZLER


Edgar (Dan) Dantzler, 84, Burlington, died peacefully Nov. 25, 2012, at Kindred Care Center. He was born Nov. 21, 1928, to the late Manly and Katherine (Shumaker) Dantzler in Rocky Mount, N.C. His early life was spent in Rocky Mount, and Elloree, S.C., helping on the farm. In 1944 he began his work at the shipyard in Charleston, S.C., as an electrician.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1946. On Nov. 23, 1953, he married Mary Marjorie Degrave at the American Chapel in Wiesbaden Germany. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years throughout the Korean War, Occupation of Germany and Vietnam receiving the Bronze Star. After retiring from the USAF he was employed at the Ball Foster Glass Company for 22 years as a furnace operator.

He and his wife were very active members devoting many hours of service to St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They both received the Benemerenti Medal from Pope Paul VI.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years; daughter, Dr. Katherine (Paul Olson) Dantzler-Olson; granddaughter, Froya Marit Olson; nieces; nephews; cousins and friends.

He was further preceded in death by siblings, Uge Mack, Harry, Floyd, Hiram, Mamie Smith and Edna Avers

Visitation is Thursday, Nov. 29, from 4-7 p.m., at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home, 625 Browns Lake Drive, Burlington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Rev. James Volkert will officiate. Burial will follow service in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
