Ellen L. David, 85, died peacefully at her residence in Racine, March 8, 2012, surrounded by her family.
She was born Sept. 21, 1926, in Burlington, to the late Adolph P. and Grace M. (Deist) Marck. The Marck family was related to the Karcher, Runkel and Rietbrock families, all early contributors to the Burlington community.
She spent her early life in Burlington, Mukwonago and Waukesha. She graduated from Union Grove Normal School in 1944 and began a teaching career that spanned 35 years. She also earned graduate degrees in education, remedial reading and theology from Carroll College and Carthage College. She retired in 1988, after 18 years with the former Lyons State Graded School and Burlington Area Schools.
On Jan. 27, 1951, she married James A. David in Waukesha. The couple lived in Menomonee Falls and Oostburg, before moving to Burlington in 1961. During their lives in Burlington, the couple co-chartered Bethel #76 of Job’s Daughters in Burlington and served as chapel guardians for several years. They retired to North Carolina’s Outer Banks where they enjoyed gardening, tending to their animals and taking walks on the beach; returning to Racine in 2004. James preceded Ellen in death in July 2006.
Survivors include her daughters, Jennifer (Bobby) Canales, Martha, Cynthia; son, Steven; other relatives and friends, along with the hundreds of students she helped educate in her lifetime.
Private family services have been held. A scattering of the couple’s cremains at North Carolina’s Outer Banks is planned for a future date.
Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Racine, handled arrangements.
