GLADYS D. BAUMEISTER


Gladys D. Baumeister, 93, Burlington, died Oct. 15, 2012, at The Kathy Hospice in West Bend. She was born March 4, 1919, in Burlington, to the late Nels and Emma (Tesch) Dillonaire.

She was a lifetime resident of Burlington and a graduate of Burlington High School and Racine-Kenosha Teachers College.

On June 8, 1940, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Burlington, she married Francis M. Baumeister. Following marriage they made their home in Burlington and raised 11 children. He preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 2003.

She taught for several years in local rural schools during the late 1930s and early 1940s, including Applewood School in Waterford and Winkler School at Bohners Lake. After raising 11 children she returned to teaching in the late 1960s and for 15 years had taught many to crochet at the adult night school at Burlington High School. She would teach herself the lessons on Sunday so that she could teach the class on Monday. Family always came first for Gladys. She loved to read, crochet, bake, cook and often had weekly lunches at the Palace Restaurant. For many years she enjoyed water aerobics at Burlington Wellness Center.

Survivors include her children, Mary (Ernest) Hebior, Paris Township, Diane (David Benner) Benjamin, Milwaukee and De Soto, David (Sandy) Baumeister, Glendale, Anthony (Candace) Baumeister, Iola, Thomas (Karen) Baumeister, West Allis, Linda Garrett, Harrisburg, N.C., Anne (James) Culp, Franklin, Joan (Daniel) Boldt, Campbellsport, Paul Baumeister, St. Louis, Mo.; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and three on the way; a great-great-granddaughter; son-in-law, Gary Hegemann; brother, Willard (Sylvia) Dillonaire, Enterprise, Ala., special caregiver of son James Baumeister, Ann Smith of Marion, Ill.; nieces; nephews; in-laws and cousins.

She was further preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Hegemann; son, James Baumeister and his wife Shirley; son-in-law, Michael Garrett and brother, Wallace Dillonaire.

Visitation is Friday, Oct. 19, from 10:30 a.m., until time of Mass at 11:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in the Good Shepherd Chapel. Private burial will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Memorials have been suggested to the Susan G Komen Foundation, St. Vincent de Paul of Burlington, the VNA of Wisconsin or to The Kathy Hospice of West Bend. Schuette-Daniels Family Funeral Home, Burlington, is serving the family.
