Howard C. “Bindo” Harlow, 88, of Burlington, died Sept. 27, 2012, at Arbor View Communities in Burlington. He was born on Nov. 24, 1923 in Burlington to the late Charles and Emma (nee Hanson) Harlow.
He was a lifelong resident of Burlington, graduating from Burlington High School. On May 16, 1951
He married Zoe Salkos on May 16, 1951; she preceded him in death Nov. 16, 1962.
He married Patricia Hegeman on Feb. 1, 1964; she preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 2009.
Survivors include his children, Mark (Michelle) Harlow, Rapid City, S.D., Andrew (Maura-Shane), Mishawaka, Ind., and Victoria (Dan) Sullivan, San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Erin, Bridget (Steve) Pitney, Andrew (Melissa), Melinda, Danielle (Eric) Bigge, Katie (Eric) Barker, Greg and Bethany; great-granddaughters, Reese Barker and Leighton Bigge; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Kerkman, New Munster, Lorraine Ehlen, Burlington, and Zoe (Honey) Salkos, Chicago.
He was further preceded in death by his brother, Wallace; and sister, Ruth Klitzkie.
At age 17 Howard began his 39-year career at the Bank of Burlington as the janitor. He went on to fill virtually every role at the bank, serving as president and vice-chairman of the board before retiring.
Howard was involved in many professional, civic, and charitable organizations including the Plymouth Congregational Church, the Burlington Rotary Club, the Wisconsin Bankers Association, and the Southeastern Safe Deposit Association. He also was a member of the board of the Memorial Hospital and the Public Swimming Pool for many years.
Our father never had any formal education after high school, but he learned very early that conducting himself with dignity and character would serve him well in his personal and professional life. He enjoyed many lifelong friendships that enriched his life and the lives of this family, and it is with heartfelt acknowledgement that we thank each of you for the joy that you brought.
A visitation will be held at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home, 625 Browns Lake Dr., Burlington, on Friday, Oct. 12, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Inurnment will immediately follow at the Burlington Cemetery.
To all his friends and relatives and on behalf of his children, we know that he would be humbled by, and that we would be honored with, your presence as we say our final farewell to the finest man that we ever knew and were fortunate enough to call Dad.
