JOAN R. WEILER


Joan Ruth Comfort (Walle) Weiler, 84, Waterford, died at her home on May 3, 2012, surrounded by family.

She was born in Winona, Minn., on Nov. 12, 1927, to the late Christian and Ruth Walle. She graduated from Winona High School in 1945. She met and married her first husband, James Steward in 1947 and started their family of three children. She attended North Iowa Area Community College to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.

In 1972 she moved to Wisconsin, working at Southern Center in Union Grove. There she met and married Charles Weiler in 1975. She continued her education and received her Registered Nursing degree at Gateway Technical College. She worked at and retired from St. Mary’s Hospital in Racine in 1990.

She and her beloved husband loved to travel the world and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He preceded her in death.

She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and was very active in Norway Lutheran Church, Norway Choir, Martha Clausen Group and Bible study.

She was past president of the Bixby Hansen American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Red Hat Ladies. She was a special person, who always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone.

Survivors include her children, Michael (Linda) of Cornville, Ariz., Lawrence (Kathy), Missouri City, Texas, and Carolyn Steward, Henderson, Nev.; step-children, William Weiler, Neillsville, Jane Babik, Rochester and Richard (Rose) Weiler, Burlington; grandchildren, Jodi, Megan, Ryan, Jonathan and Patrick Steward, Jennifer (Dan Grady), Terese, Kristin, Karen, Matthew Weiler, Melanie (Heiko) Wendel, Bradley (Angela) Sundstrom and Kevin Babik; great-grand children, Isabelle Sundstrom and Liam Grady; and two additional great-grandchildren to be born this summer to Brad and Angela  and Melanie and Heiko; brother, David (Ellen) Walle; nephews, Gary (Kim), Greg (Kathy), Grant, and Guy Foat.

She was further preceded in death by stepmothers, Helen Walle and Grace Walle; sister, Jean (Herbert) Foat; grandson, Michael Steward; and sons-in-law, William Schnitkey and John Babik.

Visitation is Thursday, May 10, from 4-5:45 p.m., with services at 6 p.m., at Norway Lutheran Church, 6321 Heg Park Road, Wind Lake. Private burial is in Union Grove Memorial Cemetery. Mealy Funeral Home, Waterford, is assisting the family.

In Lieu of floral expressions of sympathy, memorials to Norway Lutheran Church for the church choir and the maintenance of Norway Church on the hill are suggested.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Karen Weiler for her loving care of grandma in her final months, to Home & Hospice Advantage and especially Jan and Kaitlyn and the Foat families for their help and support.
