John Wayland ‘Jack’ Atherton (Lt. Col. Ret.), son of the late Clayton and Jessie Atherton, was born Aug. 12, 1919, in Rochester, and died at Fairfax Hospital surrounded by his family on Dec. 4, 2011.
He honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 24 years before accepting a position in the private sector with the Construction Specifications Institute.
He married the love of his life, Mary Ellen ‘Bug’ Warner and they lived happily together for 65 years, enjoying their family, friends and traveling.
Survivors include his three sons, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were Dec. 16, at Greensprings Village Chapel, Springfield, Va.
