Tauno T. Maki, 94, Union Grove, died peacefully July 3, 2012, at Wisconsin Veterans Home, Boland Hall, after a long illness.
He was born Dec. 14, 1917, to the late Thomas and Impe (Jarvie) Maki in Wakefield, Mich. He spent his early life in Ironwood, Mich.
He married Mildred K. Garreau on Jan. 31, 1942, in Montreal. He worked as a lumberjack, drove the logging truck and worked at the Montreal Iron Ore. After the mine closed, Tauno and Mildred moved to Union Grove where he worked for Southern Center until retiring in 1980.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 361st Infantry Division and was stationed in Italy. He was a lifetime member of the Kansasville VFW Post 7924 and a member of the Union Grove American Legion Post 171. He enjoyed attending many of his army reunions with Mildred. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, traveling, walking and reading westerns.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years; children, Ted (Patty) Maki, New Berlin, Donald Maki, Union Grove, Leonard Maki (friend, Nancy), Milwaukee, Kenneth Maki (friend, Kay) Burlington; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; brother, Kenneth Maki of Carey; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was further preceded in death by siblings, Reino, Edwin, Bernard and Mary.
Funeral services were July 8, at Polnasek-Daniels Funeral Home, Union Grove. Burial with full military honors was July 10 at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
