Velma M. (Schmalfeldt) Proost, 95, Burlington, died Feb. 20, 2012, at her home. She was born June 22, 1916, in Silver Lake, to the late George and Sophie (Swartz) Schmalfeldt. She grew up in Silver Lake and was a graduate of Wilmot High School. She continued her education and graduated from Union Grove Teachers College. She taught at various schools in the Racine and Kenosha area and retired from Bristol Grade School in 1986.
Velma married Henry ”Hank” Proost of Union Grove and resided there. They owned and operated Hanks Tog Shop until 1978 when they moved to Burlington. He preceded her in death in 1980. She was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital of Burlington and an avid fan of the Wisconsin Badgers, Brewers, and Packers.
Survivors include her sister, Olene (Floyd) Zarnstorff, Twin Lakes, and many nieces and nephews.
She was further preceded in death by brothers, Harry, Fred, Emerson ”Bud,” Donald, Hardy Schmalfeldt; and sisters, Emily Dean, Margaret Ballock, and Lou Janke.
Visitation is Saturday, Feb. 25, from 11 a.m., until time of services at 1 p.m., at Haase-Lockwood Funeral Homes, 620 Legion Drive, Twin Lakes. Burial will be in Salem Mound Cemetery in Silver Lake.
