Walter L. “Wally” Hegeman, 86, Boulder Junction, died peacefully in his sleep at Park Falls Nursing Home.
He was born Sept. 10, 1926, in Milwaukee, to the late Leonard and Freda Hegeman. He later moved to Waterford.
He attended St. Mathew’s School and St. Pius XI in Milwaukee.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, serving in England, France, Switzerland and Germany during World War II. Upon returning home, he took an apprenticeship in Waterford with his father in 1949.
He married Sarah (nee Curnow) May 7, 1949, at St. Thomas Church in Waterford, where they built a home and resided for many years. For 27 years, Walter was considered a Master Builder, building and remodeling homes for Hegeman Builders. He also volunteered work on many youth projects in Waterford.
In 1975, the family moved to Boulder Junction, where they purchased The Nick Nack Niche store and also established a woodworking shop, making boxes and furniture.
He served St. Anne Church youth as a C.Y.O. teacher, and was also a member of the local Bible Study Group at The Community Church of Boulder Junction.
He was a member of Richardson-Michaud American Legion Post 451, of Boulder Junction.
Wally especially enjoyed biking around town, visiting friends. He was liked and respected by people of all walks of life.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah; son, Tim; and daughters, Barbara (Dave), Halle and Molly; sisters, Carol (Bud) Haas and Lois (Joe) Harry of Waterford; sister-in-law, Ronell Hegeman; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends.
He was further preceded in death by brothers, Leonard (Ronell), Gerry and Richard Hegeman; and son-in-law, Scott Kimball.
Services will be held at noon on Saturday, Nov. 10 at St. Anne Catholic Church, 10314 Main St., Boulder Junction. Mealy Funeral Home, Waterford, is serving the family.
