Paul L. Merten, 92, Burlington, died Jan. 5, 2013, at Timber Oaks in Union Grove. He was born Aug. 22, 1920, in Lake Geneva, to the late Edgar J. and Elizabeth W. (Luke) Merten. He had been a lifelong resident of Burlington, attending Rochester Ag School and LaSalle University in Chicago.
He had worked for American Motors, the Town of Burlington and Lavelle Industries. He was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Burlington as well as the Sentry Coffee Clutch. He enjoyed learning and loved to read, especially magazines. He also loved traveling all over the world and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
Survivors include his siblings, James (Arlene) Merten, Kenosha, Sister Mary Joyce Merten, SSND, Burlington, Betty Gaiser, Bedford, Ind., Joyce Clason, La Crosse; sisters-in-law, Kathy Merten, Hot Springs, Ark., Loretta Merten, Fennimore, Carol Merten, Burlington; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was further preceded in death by siblings, Geraldine, John, Edgar F. and Roger Merten; and by brother-in-law, Ralph Clason.
Visitation is Thursday, Jan. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home, 625 Browns Lake Drive, Burlington. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Jan. 10, at 1:30 p.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Rev. James Volkert will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Kilian’s Cemetery in Lyons. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Burlington are suggested.
