Sally Lu (Sheard) Stark, Burlington, died peacefully March 14, 2013, at her home with her loving family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born to the late Edwin and LuLu (Dobson) Sheard on Feb. 19, 1935. She grew up and was educated in Rochester. She attended and greatly enjoyed the memorable Ag School, where she had been prom queen and valedictorian. Anyone who was an Aggie knew Sally’s passion for her alma mater.
She furthered her education and obtained a business degree from the Sheboygan School of Business. Her ‘claim to fame’ was becoming Dr. Robert Spitzer’s secretary at the Murphy Products Co. She enjoyed being on his Christmas list, all these years later.
On Oct. 8, 1955, she married her beloved husband, Herb Stark. Early in their marriage Herb’s jobs took them to Michigan, Minnesota, and New York, where many friends were made and kept for years to come.
She had a young family of three children that made the travels and relocating many times, an even bigger challenge. The final move brought them back to Burlington where they lived ‘in the house that Herb built.’ They loved their neighborhood and all their great friends. Sally enjoyed her later working years as a cashier with Spiegelhoff’s Pick ‘n Save. She was also very active with Meals on Wheels.
She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church where she was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader. She was the president of St. Ann’s Society and chaired the Fall Festival turkey dinners and the spaghetti dinners.
She very much enjoyed all of her sheepshead games with the ‘Waterford farmers,’ poker with family and her many friends in her bridge clubs. Lawrence Welk, Wheel of Fortune and of course the Green Bay Packers, were her favorites on TV.
Survivors include her son, Steve (Cheryl) Stark; daughters, Gayle (Randy) Newholm, and Pamela (Butch Voelkering) Stark; grandchildren, Matthew (Katie) Newholm, Michael (Jackie Kogler) Newholm, Amy and Adam Stark; great-grandchild, Jack Matthew Newholm, which made her such a proud and ‘great grandma;’ her sister, Gloria Ezerins, whom the family would like to thank for all her help and support.
She was further preceded in death by her husband in 2000, and has many friends and relatives, past and present, that will be either greeting her, or missing her, here on this earth.
Funeral services were March 18, at St. Charles Catholic Church. The Rev. Steve Amann officiated. Private burial was in St. Charles Catholic Cemetery. Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home, Burlington, served the family.
Donations to the Aurora VNA Hospice or St. Charles School are suggested.
The family would like to thank the Aurora Hospice for all their kind and compassionate care. They helped fulfill Sally’s wish to die at home.
