Stanley “Stan” John Baumel, 72, Burlington, died July 11, 2013. He was born in Wisconsin Rapids, April 11, 1941, to the late John and Shirley (Oppedesan) Baumel. He spent his early life in Sparta where he graduated from Sparta High School. He also attended a trade school in the Twin Cities. He served in the U.S. Army.
On July 29, 2000, in Woodstock, Ill., he married Joan Ellen Zimmerman. He was a longtime resident of Burlington and was the owner/operator of Bassett Racing Wheel in Burlington. Since 2003 he spent six months of the year in Palm Coast, Fla.
He loved music and played several musical instruments; he had a polka band with his wife and friends, called the Northern Echo Band and they played all over. He rode hundreds of thousands of miles on his Harley accompanied by his Highland Terrier Westies.
He was a fantastic tool and dye maker; loved anything to do with motors so he could take them apart and put them back together and he also enjoyed building street rods.
Survivors include his wife; son, Kyle Baumel, Nevada; several stepchildren and grandchildren; brother, Larry Baumel, Little Falls; goddaughter, Jennie Massen; close cousins, Carmen (Jim) Peterson, Nekoosa, Dan (Jessie) Oppedesan, Friendship, Janis (Kent) Massen, Adams; several in-laws; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
A gathering of family and friends is Thursday, July 18, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, from 3-4 p.m. A Celebration of Life with the Rev. Rob Bolling officiating will be at 4 p.m. Inurnment will follow at Burlington Cemetery. Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home & Crematory, Burlington, is serving the family.
