Thomas C. McDowell, 62, Burlington, died Aug. 26, 2013, at his home.
He was born Dec. 10, 1950, in Racine, to the late Clifford Ward McDowell and Ethel Catherine (Reinke) McDowell. He attended St. John’s Lutheran School and graduated from Lutheran High School in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1972. He received a degree in horticulture from Gateway Technical Institute in 1980.
He married Cathryn Marie Nielsen on June 30, 1973, in Racine. They lived in Burlington for 23 years.
He was the owner of Tom McDowell Nursery & Landscaping. He expressed his unique creativity in the landscaping plans he lovingly designed and planted. He enjoyed playing softball, skiing and fishing. He was a volunteer and member at large for the board of directors of Bong Naturalist Association.
Survivors include his wife; sister, Kathleen Hyatt; aunts, Joyce Wardell and Eleanor McDowell; mother and father-in-law, Carl and Lucille Nielsen; sister-in-law, Janet Cuzner; sisters/brothers-in-law, Carla (Jim) Wilks, Christine (Scott) Olsen, Connie (Mike) Suwalski; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was further preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Cuzner; niece, Connie Grebetz; cousin, Vicky Linden; and other family members.
In lieu of flowers, plant a tree or shrub in honor of Tom or donate to the charity of your choice.
A special thank you to Seasons Hospice for their compassionate care and to loving friends and family who traveled with Tom on his final journey.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m., at Community United Methodist Church, 455 S. Jefferson St., Waterford, with the Rev. Markus Wegenast officiating. Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home & Crematory, Burlington, is serving the family.
