VELMA S. McCASLIN

Velma S. McCaslin, 95, Burlington, died June 8, 2013, at Lakeland Health Care Center, Elkhorn. She was a member of St. Charles Parish, Burlington.

She was born in Kansas City, Mo., to the late Herman P. and Alice M. (Thompson) Schwickrath on Dec. 14, 1917. She attended St. Agnes Academy and worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co., before marrying the late Robert C. McCaslin III, of Pennsylvania, at Camp Crowder, Mo., on Jan. 22, 1944.

Due to her husband’s post war employment, they lived in the communities of Chillicothe and Peoria, Ill., where she made it a home. She became an active member and leader in the community, such as the PTA, church groups, the Chillicothe University Women’s Club and Girl Scouts. She worked with Intermediate Girl Scouts for five years and was director of Girl Scout Day Camp.

Always the entertainer, she enjoyed hosting family and friends, preparing scrumptious meals, playing the piano, and game nights.

When Robert and Velma retired to the Lake of Ozarks in Camdenton, Mo., she was happiest watching the sunset over the lake with her husband of 53 years by her side. Together they continued to entertain family and friends with boating excursions and Mexican Fiestas until Robert passed away. She then moved to Jon Knox Village in Lee Summit, Mo., and continued to enjoy retirement. In 2004, she moved to Burlington, to be closer to her daughter.

Survivors include her daughter, Pamela McCaslin, Burlington; grandchildren, Jennifer Wojcik, W. Andrew  and Jedah Wojcik, Matthew and Susie Wojcik, all of the Chicago area, and Kimberly Wojcik, Washington, D.C.

Her family remembers her laughing about her long life, riding in a horse and buggy to automobiles to riding in airplanes to seeing man walk on the moon.

A memorial service is Wednesday, June 19, at St. Charles Catholic Church, Burlington, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Kansas City, Mo., on Thursday, June 19, at 1:30 p.m. Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home & Crematory, Burlington, is serving the family.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lakeland Health Care Center in Elkhorn. Memorials should be donated to the Lakeland Health Center.
