Viola E. Penzel, 92, of Burlington, passed away peacefully at her home, on Thursday, Dec. 12.
She was born on Dec. 5, 1921, in Chicago, to Albert and Elizabeth (nee Follman) Connolly. Vi spent her early life and received her education in Chicago, graduating from Providence High School.
On No. 29, 1952 in Chicago, Vi was united in marriage to Steven Castiglia. He preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 1961. Vi was then united in marriage to George W. Penzel Sr. on November 10, 1973 at St. Angela’s Parish in Chicago. He preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 2000.
Following marriage they resided in Westchester, Ill., but spent their summers in Burlington. In 1983 they made Burlington their permanent home.
Vi was a homemaker who spent lots of time volunteering for the Burlington Chamber of Commerce and Memorial Hospital of Burlington. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, and she loved to travel.
She is survived by her children, Mary Ann McBean of Batavia, Ill., Donna Yeksigian of Roselle, Ill., Joan Penzel-Adamcik of Elmwood Park, Ill., George Jr. (Kathy) Penzel of Burlington, and Barbara (Karl) Kamber of Iowa City; grandchildren, Danielle (Brandon) Denneen, Megan McBean, Joey Adamcik, Jimmy Penzel, Erin Penzel, Kerry Kamber, Kayla Kamber, Brian Kamber, and Colin Kamber; and one great-grandchild.
Vi was preceded in death by her parents, and husbands Steven and George.
Services will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 11 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Cemetery Chapel in Hillside, Ill.
Memorials have been suggested to Aurora VNA Hospice.
Vi’s family would like to thank VNA Hospice and give a special thank you to Beth and Ashley Derks for their tender, loving care and support. Also, thank you to the Memorial Hospital of Burlington ICU RN’s especially Lisa Krismer; the Burlington ER RN’s, and Dr. Randy Schmidt for their care.
