JOHN F. UHLENHAKE

John F. ‘Jack’ Uhlenhake, 88, Waterford, died May 12, 2014, at Waterford Senior Living. He was born in Elkhorn, on May 1, 1926, to the late Henry and Victoria (Spieker) Uhlenhake. He spent his early life on the family farm on Wheatland Road.

On April 14, 1951, he married Mary L. Martin, at St. Charles Catholic Church. They started their married life living on the family farm. He worked as a farmer before entering the U.S. Army where he served for two years as a mechanic. He was employed with the Town of Burlington Street Department for 27 years, retiring in 1988. After retirement he drove school bus. He also served on the Town of Burlington Fire Department for 25 years. He was a jack-of-all-trades, enjoyed being a mechanic, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years; children, Vicki (Woody) Freitag. Elkhorn, Margaret Lynn, Thorp, Edward (Colleen) Uhlenhake, Richland Center, Gregory (Kris) Uhlenhake, Burlington; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; a brother, Lawrence (Carla) Uhlenhake, Sturtevant; sisters, Joann Holtzheimer, Lyons, and Patricia Gilson, Texas.

He was further preceded in death by an infant son, Todd, and four brothers, Robert, Charles, Louis and Richard.

In lieu of flowers the family would like memorials to go to the Town of Burlington Fire Department.

The family would like to thank the staff at Waterford Senior Living and the nurses with Allay Hospice for their care and compassion during this time.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m., at St. Charles Catholic Church, 440 Kendall St., Burlington, with the Rev. Sergio Lizama officiating. Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery on Friday, May 16, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Thursday at the church, from 3-6 p.m. Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home & Crematory, Burlington, is serving the family.

    So sorry to hear of this wonderful family’s loss. As a friend of Pats when we were young I had occasions to visit her mother and dad on their farm. They were such a warm welcoming family. My prayers are with you Patricia for the loss of your dear brother. Elaine Herban Wagner
