DONALD V. UHEN

      Donald V. Uhen, 98, of Burlington, passed away Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, at Oak Park Place in Burlington.

Don was born in Burlington on June 13, 1925, to Fred and Dora (nee Recktenwald) Uhen. He grew up in Burlington and graduated from St. Mary’s High School class of 1943. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Marquette Engineering School in 1949. Don was a member of the Army Air Corps, flying B17 and B29 bombers from 1943 until 1945.

On June 14, 1952, at Our Lady of Mercy in Cogswell, North Dakota, he was united in marriage to Dolores Kummeth. She preceded him in death on March 10, 2019. Following marriage, they made their home in Cudahy before moving to Burlington in 1953.

Don was a Sales Manager for Deltrol Controls. He was a member of the Serra Club, and St. Mary Catholic Church. He was a member of St. Mary’s Choir, the Athletic Association, and the Band Boosters. Don took up skydiving at the age of 86, hanging up his chute at 97 years old. He was an original adopter of the home PC. He enjoyed visiting casinos and loved to travel, especially to the Smoky Mountains. Don and Dee visited all of the Burlingtons in the United States. They also traveled to Ecuador several times to do mission work with the Franciscans, supporting the Shrine of the Divino Niño.

Don is survived by his children, Donna (Jim) Makouske, David (Rebecca Ruedebusch-Uhen) Uhen, Judy (Dave) Meigel, Jean (John Gabaldo) Uhen, Greg (Cindy) Uhen, Katy (Bruce) LaBuda and Mary (Anthony) Savoia; grandchildren, Christine (Tom), Dan (Caley), Joe, Gina, Lee (China), Ray, Ty, Rose, Max, Sam, Zac (Carly), Christoph (Meghan), Trudie, Eugene (Alissa), Dora, Emma, Ben (Britt-Marie), Sarah, Dan, Kerstin, Carolyn, Sasha, Diego and Ali; and great-grandchildren, Penny, Elena, Finn, Jackson, Alex, Everly, Jade, Charlotte, and one on the way. Don is also survived by his brother Richard Uhen; sister-in-law Donna Uhen; brother-in-law Robert Kummeth and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, granddaughter Abby; granddaughter-in-law Meghan; and siblings, Loraine (Edward) Gannon, Sister Rosita Uhen O.P., Roman (Lorraine) Uhen, Victor (Jeannette) Uhen, and Rev. Cletus Uhen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catholic Central High School.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Don will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Relatives and friends may visit with family on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Schuette Daniels Funeral Home. Burial will immediately follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
