JOY C. SCHERRER

Joy C. Scherrer, 90, of Burlington, passed away Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023 at Aurora Medical Center in Burlington.

Joy was born in Akron, Ohio on Oct 19, 1933. She was the only child of Edward and Donna Whims. Her mother re-married Otis C. Marshall in 1942 and they re-located to Los Angeles, California. She gained three brothers from that union, Gordon, James and Patrick Marshall. Her family left California and moved to Burlington when she was a senior in high school. She graduated from St. Mary High School in 1951. Shortly thereafter, they moved again to Milwaukee. She attended Marquette part-time while working as a Secretary to the Dean of the Graduate School.

On New Years Eve of 1951, a mutual friend arranged a blind date for Joy with the man who would become the love of her life, Norm. It was love at first sight and they dated until he left to serve his country. When he returned, they became engaged on New Years Eve of 1954 and were married on Oct. 1, 1955.

Joy had a fun job working as a tour guide for the Nestle Co. for a few years and was employed as a dental assistant to Dr. B.E. Pippin for several years. She then worked as a secretary at A.G. Edwards for eighteen years before retiring at the age of 70.

Joy loved life, but most of all her family, who meant the world to her. Her love of animals, Bridge and Poker were secondary, but surely important, as were her many friends.

Joy is survived by her children, Susan (Gary) Harper, Thomas (Mary) Scherrer and Jane (Mike) Scherrer-Atlas; grandchildren, Roman England, Kelly Scherrer, Caitlyn Scherrer, Marc Scherrer, Mitchell Scherrer and Janine Scherrer; brothers, James Marshall and Patrick (Sue) Marshall; and her beloved feline companion, Gracie. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Christopher, brother Gordon (Linda) Marshall and sister-in-law Joan Marshall.

The family would like to thank her caregivers, Ginger and Liz and the staff at Aurora Burlington Medical Center for their care during this time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or Catholic Central.

Services for Joy will be held Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home. Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Private burial for Joy will take place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.
