JOYCE VERNA WEINER

Joyce Verna (nee Linley) Weiner, a long time resident of Waterford, passed away in hospice surrounded by her loving family on Aug. 23, 2023.

Joyce was born on Sept. 5, 1934 in the family farmhouse in Mazomanie. In 1940, the family moved to a farm in Cottage Grove, where she would milk cows in the morning before school and help with other farm chores, including planting and harvesting tobacco. She attended country schools where she developed an interest in teaching. She graduated from Stoughton High School in 1952 then attended Columbus Teachers College, graduating with a teaching degree in 1954. After her children started school, she returned to college and earned her undergraduate degree from UW-Whitewater. She taught at numerous grade schools in Kenosha before returning to college to pursue her Masters degree at UW-Whitewater. She continued to work as a reading specialist until she retired.

On July 23, 1955 Joyce married the love of her life Gerald Weiner, and they were married for over 65 years. Jerry and Joyce had four children, Jeff (Amanda Borchers) Weiner, Steve (Gina) Weiner, Linda (Michael) Larsen, and Brenda Leigh Weiner. Joyce is also survived by four grandchildren, Alex Weiner, Kayla (Eric) Haas, Riley Weiner, and Karly (Stephen) Sheperd; two step-grandchildren, Jack and Julia Sarnowski; three great-grandchildren Rowen and Maya Haas, and Taytum Sheperd; her sister Virginia Wright and many special relatives and in-laws in the Linley and Weiner families including nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald, and her sisters Dorothy Schmitt and Beverly Bryant.

Jerry and Joyce loved to play golf together with family and friends. She was an avid and passionate sports fan. She loved watching her beloved Badgers, Brewers, Packers and Bucks, and especially cheering on her grandchildren at their sporting events. She was active in gardening, and cherished her red raspberries as well as her flower garden. She loved canning, and especially making pickles and jam, as everyone enjoyed. Joyce loved cooking and baking, and you could always expect a sweet treat when stopping by for a visit.

Joyce had many hobbies including cross-country skiing, tennis, cards, reading, golf and quilting. She shared the fruits of her quilting with her family to enjoy for years to come, and loved donating her quilts to the annual Lutherdale quilt auction.

In retirement, Jerry and Joyce spent many winters in Texas and later in southwest Florida. They were also able to pursue their love of travel with golfing vacations, cruises, and trips to Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Mexico and China.

The Weiner family would like to extend their thanks to the caring staff at Heritage Senior Living in Muskego, along with pastors Mark and Kristie and the community at Norway Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to Norway Lutheran Church at 6321 Heg Park Rd, Wind Lake, WI 53185 or Lutherdale, N7891 US-12, Elkhorn, WI 53121.
