SHIRLEY I. KANTHACK

      Shirley I. Kanthack, 99, of Genoa City and formerly of Burlington, passed away Wednesday Sept. 20, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born Feb. 12, 1924, in Toronto, Canada, to Arthur and Daisy (nee Taylor) Benton. She grew up in Toronto and Chicago and graduated from Grant Community High School in Fox Lake, Illinois. On April 27, 1942, in Chicago, she was united in marriage to Charles J. Kanthack. Following marriage, they lived in Fox Lake for many years. They moved to Genoa City where they lived for 15 years before moving to Burlington. Charles preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 1998. Shirley moved back to Genoa City in 2013.

Shirley was a homemaker and member of St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Burlington. She volunteered and served communion to residents in nursing homes and shut-ins. She would read the bible and visit with the residents. In her own home, there was an endless supply of food and drink for anyone who visited. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking. Everyone loved her brownies and mac & cheese. She took great pride in always taking care of other people. She always made sure she attended family events and sports outings. Shirley loved to laugh and enjoyed a good “Brandy Old Fashion”.

Shirley is survived by her children, Charlene Sherman, Regina Schaar, Edward Kanthack and John (Mary Ellen) Kanthack; 17 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter June Naponelli and siblings Joyce and Frank.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Shirley’s name can be given to Aurora at Home Hospice.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home.

Shirley’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to family friend and caretaker Janice Retzlaff, and to Dr. Welka, and Katie and Carol at Dr. Welka’s office.
