Shirley McCarthy, 93, passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023 at Waterford Senior Living.
Shirley was born on Sept. 15, 1929 in Milwaukee, to Philip J. and Agnes T. Rupp. She married Daniel McCarthy on Aug. 18, 1951 at St. Lawrence Parish in Milwaukee. Daniel preceded her in death on March 26, 2004.
Shirley attended St. Mary’s Academy in Milwaukee and Cardinal Stritch College. She taught grade school for the Franciscan nuns for three years before marriage and moving to Burlington.
She was a member of the Burlington Arts Council and served as secretary. She belonged to the Burlington Historical Society, where she enjoyed serving as docent at the Log Cabin in Wehmhoff Park. Shirley also served on the Board of the Friends of the Burlington Library.
Shirley had a passion for gardening and was a Racine/Kenosha Master Gardener Volunteer. She was a founding member of the Burlington Garden Club and was newsletter editor from 2003 through 2011. She enjoyed many garden trips with the Garden Club, especially a trip to the Chelsea Flower Show in London.
In addition to gardening, Shirley enjoyed sewing, knitting, painting and baking favorites for her family. Many family vacations were enjoyed with the family in northern Wisconsin.
Shirley is survived by four sons, Daniel (Tamara) of Burlington, Steve of Burlington, Peter (Kimberly) of Milwaukee and Patrick (Kelli) of California; five daughters, Catherine and Janet of Milwaukee, Colleen Regner of Muskego, Mary (Ed) Schuerman of Burlington and Julie of California; grandchildren, Stephanie and Samantha (Kenny Allen) Sanchez, Josh (Alicia), Luke and Rachel Regner, Katie (Steve) Kovacek, Heidi (Brodie) Smith, Beau (Kate) Schuerman, Andrew, Adam and Sara (Vince Franzen) McCarthy, Danielle Hegemann, Kylee (Matt) Stevens, Ryan Webster, Emma McCarthy, William Hyde and Hayden Clark; great-grandchildren, Alexis (Andrew) Disney-Hansen, Katlin, Jordy and Haley Kovacek, Lorelai and Faith Smith, Kyra Schuerman, Genevieve Spencer, Jaiden and Mariah Hegemann, Addison and Jenna Regner and Jeremiah Combs.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Daniel McCarthy, parents and sisters, Janet Rupp and Marie Welter.
A Service of Sharing for Shirley will be held on Friday, Jan. 13, 2023 at 6 p.m. at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home. Other relatives and friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Burlington at a later date.
