William “Gus” J. Umnus, 87, of Waterford, passed away Sunday, August 27, 2023 at Aurora Medical Center in Burlington.
Born in Burlington, Wisconsin on September 18, 1935, he was the son of Harry and Celesta (nee Harter) Umnus. His early life was spent in Burlington, where he graduated from St. Mary High School. He served in the Army National Guard of Wisconsin for 3 years as a sharpshooter and was honorably discharged as a Staff Seargent. On October 6, 1956 at St. Charles Catholic Church, he was united in marriage to Lettie Jo Martin. Following marriage, they made Burlington their home. Lettie preceded him in death on March 23, 2021. He was a lifetime resident of Burlington.
Gus worked as a tinsmith for Glaser Hardware Store, at Spiegelhoff’s Grocery Store and as a service technician for Wisconsin Southern Gas Company of which he retired from. He was an usher at St. Mary Catholic Church for many years. He loved fishing, his dog Sadie, woodworking, model trains and playing Cribbage and Sheepshead. He also loved spending time with his family.
Gus is survived by his children, Barb (Dan) Zelenski, Kim (Gary) Foat and Chris (Scott Hess) Kelly; grandchildren, Ryan (Kristin) Zelenski, Jennifer (Kenny) DeGroot, Jeff (Chelsey) Foat, Shannon Foat, Nick (Erin) Kelly and Austin (Mallory) Kelly; great-grandchildren, Landon DeGroot, Riley and Ethan Zelenski and Rosie and Waylon Kelly; sister-in-law, Judith Umnus; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and siblings Daniel Umnus and Lynn Umnus.
The family would like to give special thanks to the Waterford Rescue Squad and the Aurora Burlington Medical Center ER doctors and staff for all of their kindness and compassion toward Gus and his family during this time.
Services for Gus will be held Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home. Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral Home. A private burial will take place at St. Mary Cemetery.
