JOAN AGNES STROHM

Joan Agnes Strohm, 91, of Burlington, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at Aurora Hospital in Burlington. She was born on Dec. 26, 1932 to Elmer and Agnes (Elverman) Scherrer and grew up in New Munster.

Joan met her future husband, Richard Strohm, while in high school at St. Mary’s in Burlington. They were united in marriage on Oct. 10, 1953. Joan was a devoted wife, mother to six children, loving grandmother to 16 grandchildren and great-grandmother to 22 great-grandchildren.

Joan worked for several Burlington businesses while maintaining a busy household but will be best remembered as a supportive wife, incredible chef, talented seamstress, chauffeur and cheerleader for her children’s many activities and for maintaining a classic home where her children grew up learning what love was all about. She was an active volunteer at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Burlington, and longtime member of the church choir, as well as Sweet Adelines. More than anything, Joan loved her family and it showed in every meal she cooked and every volunteer position that enabled her to spend more time with her children. Joan was very proud of her family and their families. Her grandchildren were individually a source of pride and nana enjoyed sharing pictures and visits with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Holidays were always made special with incredible baked goods shared with all.

Joan is survived by her children, Michael (Erica) Strohm, Gary (Mary) Strohm, Kathy (Larry) Vos, Richard (Nadeen) Strohm, and Diane (Brian) Biedrzycki; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Barbara Scherrer, Marlene Scherrer, Ed Scherrer, Carolyn (Jim) Bauman and Kathy Bryant. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, daughter Karen (Greg) Peterson, parents Elmer and Agnes Scherrer, and siblings Charlotte, Elmer, Norman, Thomas, Joseph and Patrick.

The family would like to thank the staff at Oak Park Place, Aurora Hospice, Aurora ICU and all her physicians for the loving care she received over the past two years and in her final days.

Joan will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made in Joan’s memory to St. Charles Catholic Church in Burlington.
