John A. Scherer, 84, of Burlington, passed away Friday, Feb. 2, 2024 at Aurora Medical Center in Burlington.
John was born in Stockland Township, Illinois, on Sept. 7, 1939, to Joseph and Maude (nee Worthington) Scherer. His early life was spent in rural Stockland Township, where he graduated from Stockland High School. On Aug. 19, 1961, in Watseka, Illinois, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Sever. Following marriage, they briefly made their home in Watseka.
John was a cattle farmer and in 1980 moved to Burlington to manage White House Angus Farm. Once the cattle were sold, he worked for JW Peters, retiring in 2005. He was a member of the Wisconsin Angus Association and Northern Illinois Angus Association. He liked to travel around to watch his grandchildren play sports, and recently enjoyed watching the great-grandchildren. He enjoyed his “Happy Hour” at the Brickyard for many years before retiring.
John is survived by his wife, Ann; children, Johanna (Ken) Kretschmer and Jeffrey (Julie) Scherer; grandchildren, Kristin (Daniel) Stroening, Brian Kretschmer, Dalton Scherer and Carly (Tony) Ruzzicone; great-grandchidren, Madison Stroening, Cameron Stroening, Mayah Ruzzicone and Skylar Ruzzicone; and brother, David Scherer of Charlestown, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Mark Scherer and siblings, Arnold Scherer, Marsha (Don) Laffoon and Marna (Terry) Cooley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society or your local animal shelter.
A private burial will take place at a later date.
