Reid F. Horle joined his wife in death on May 14, 2024, with his three daughters by his side.
Reid was born in Milwaukee on April 27, 1929 to Lawrence and Maybelle (Rothenmaier) Horle. He spent his early years in West Bend.
He met his wife, Joyce, in LaCrosse, while attending church. He looked up into the choir loft and saw an angel. Reid and Joyce were married on Nov. 22, 1951. Joyce passed away in 2021 after almost 70 years of marriage. They had three daughters, Sue (Terry) Barham, Katherine Galstad, and Barbara (Michael) Kessler. He also has seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren who will miss him greatly.
Reid received his bachelor’s degree in 1952 from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in physical education. During the next several years he taught physical education and coached sports at several high schools in Wisconsin and Illinois. In 1961 he received MEd from the University of Illinois in guidance and counseling. In 1967 he received his EdD from the University of Wyoming in counselor education. The remainder of his professional career was spent at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. His career spanned the positions of Director of Admissions, Director of Housing, Director of Placement and Career Advising, and Dean of Students.
Reid belonged to several fraternal organizations, including the Freemasons, Elks, Knight’s Templar, and Shriner’s. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, most recently at North Pointe United Methodist Church in Racine.
Reid and Joyce retired in 1991 and moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas. In their later years, they moved back to Wisconsin to be closer to family.
Reid’s family would like to thank the caregivers at Oak Park Place Burlington and St. Croix Hospice for the excellent and compassionate care he received. Memorials may be sent to United Methodist Higher Education Foundation, University of Wisconsin – La Crosse Foundation, and the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
