REVEREND PAUL NEWELL RAY

      Reverend Paul Newell Ray, a cherished minister and pillar of the Rochester community, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, July 4, 2024 at the age of 85. Pastor Ray’s journey of faith and service touched the hearts of many.

Born on Jan. 11, 1939 in Spring Green, he was the son of Newell and Ethelyn (nee Hyatt) Ray. He grew up in the Madison and Verona areas, graduating from Verona High School. He graduated from Chicago Bible College (“Christian Life”) and Western Theological Seminary. In 1963 in Rockford, Illinois, he was united in marriage to Agneta Gustafsson. One week after marriage, he was ordained and together with his wife they served in churches for over 61 years.

Over the course of his dedicated career, he faithfully served congregations in various communities, including Dodgeville, Spring Green, Lone Rock, Traverse City, Michigan, Allegan, Michigan Beloit, Yarmouthport, Massachusetts, Hanson, Massachusetts, Taunton, Massachusetts, and finally at First Congregational Church of Rochester. In each location, he led with a spirit of love, compassion and unwavering faith. His sermons were known for their profound biblical wisdom and ability to connect deeply with parishioners of all ages. His genuine kindness and care for the people that he served embodying the true essence of Christian charity.

He was very involved with the NACCC, including serving as moderator and on many committees. He authored many hymn lyrics, poetry and a book on the topic of Genesis, which is soon to be published. He was the author of the hymn, “Christ’s Body All Are We”.

Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Agneta Ray; his children, Steve Ray, Kerri (Thomas) Phillips and Christy Ray; proud grandfather to Torin and Kaia Phillips; and siblings, Eleanore (Rev. Anthony) Cibulka, Ruth (Gary) Keller, Jeanette Paulson, Susan (Alvin) Krieger, Gordon (Betty) Ray, Joleene (David) Hewitt, Cheryl (Dennis) Davidson and Rita (Bradley) Johnson; sister-in-law, Francis Ray; along with Agneta’s sisters Rigmor (Charles) Alexander and Viveca (Bob) Person; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jimmy Ray, Phillip Ray and Russel Ray; and brother-in-law, Richard Paulson.

Paul was known for his jolly laughter, welcoming hugs and his unwavering support for the Green Bay Packers. His joyful spirit and larger than life personality was evident in everything he did, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.

A memorial service to celebrate Pastor Ray’s life was held at First Congregational Church of Rochester on Sept. 14, 2024.
