Born in Elkhorn on April 21, 1948, he was the son of Joseph and Marilyn (nee Helgert) Pieters. His early life was spent in Burlington, where he graduated from Burlington High School, Class of 1966. He attended Kenosha Tech before being drafted and served in the US Army from 1969 until 1971. On March 14, 1970 in Elkhorn, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Nettekoven. Following marriage, they made Manhattan, Kansas their home. In May of 1971, they moved to Burlington, where he became a superintendent with the Burlington Department of Public Works.
Richard was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church and served for 21 years on the Burlington Rescue Squad, N.P.A. and helped for years with scouting and volunteered at church. Our dad loved the simple things in life – the sound of the river up north, watching a Badger game with family and friends and being surrounded by his wife, kids and grandkids on holidays.
Richard is survived by his wife, Kathleen; children, Sean (Cheri) Pieters, Jason (Amy) Pieters, Shannon (Jeff) Dardis, Erin (Joe) Milroy, Laura (Ryan) Petersen and Matthew Pieters; grandchildren, Olivia, Emma, Luke, Aiden, Zachary, Owen, Noah, Siena and Jack; brother, Steven (Candy) Pieters; along with many nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, aunt Genevieve Borst and sisters, Susan Pieters and Beverly Pretzman.
The family would like to thank the nurses, caregivers and doctors at Froedert Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital and Aurora Cancer Clinic for their care during this time.
