JAMES L. GULLA

James L. Gulla, 86, of Burlington, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2025 at Aurora Medical Center in Burlington.

Born in Virginia, Minnesota on May 7, 1938, he was the son of Frank and Phyllis (nee Tousignant) Gulla. His early life was spent in Virginia, Minnesota and Superior. He attended Virginia Junior College for two years and graduated from the University of Superior with a Master’s Degree in Education. On March 24, 1956, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Janet Schultze. They shared 69 wonderful years together.

After teaching in Superior, James accepted a job as principal for the Burlington Area Jr. High School that he enjoyed for 28 years. He was a positive influence on generations of students. In 1989, Burlington Junior High School was recognized by the Department of Education for establishing an Alcohol and Drug Program known as AOD and received the award in Washington, DC. He was also a member of St. Charles Catholic Church and volunteered for the Burlington Fire Department.

James was a big sports fan, played basketball in high school and college, and at 75 years old, was still shooting baskets at the Wellness Center. He loved cheering for the Minnesota Vikings and wore his purple and gold jacket proudly. He enjoyed music, especially Elvis and 50-60’s music. He ultimately loved people, family and life.

James is survived by his wife, Janet; children, Connie (Bob) Sevick, Cathy (Andy) Guse and Cheryl Vanderloop; grandchildren, Gina (Kahlil) Brewington, Marc Sevick and Anthony Sevick; and sister-in-law, Sandra Kwiatkowski. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Bill and Bob.

The family would like to thank the Burlington Aurora Hospital ICU staff for the wonderful care he received.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 2 p.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church. Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home.
