ROMAYNE F. DEGEN

Romayne F. Degen, 91, of Burlington, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, in Burlington.

Born in Burlington on Oct. 5, 1933, she was the daughter of Raymond and Cordella (nee Kerkman) Lois. Her early life was spent in New Munster, where she graduated from St. Alphonsus Grade School and St. Mary Catholic High School. In her younger years, she worked for Burlington Wholesale Foods as a bookkeeper. On May 25, 1957, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in New Munster, she was united in marriage to Roger H. Degen. She worked as his bookkeeper and secretary until he passed away. They were blessed with 49 years of happy marriage.

Romayne thrived in her interactions with others. She remained active in her community and in the lives of those she held dear to her heart. Whether she was singing in the choir, serving lunch to students, or washing hair for patients at the local hospital, she kept busy throughout her life. She was a proud member of the Myrtle’s during her time at St. Mary Catholic High School. As a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, she volunteered for the Ladies Guild, Choir and Funeral Choir, Prayer Network, and Hot Lunch Program. She was a den mother for Cub Scouts, a Girl Scout Leader, and delivered Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the Burlington Lioness Club, the Browns Lake Women’s Golf League and the Auxiliary of Burlington Memorial Hospital for over 40 years. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, family, and friends. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards and bowling. More recently, she enjoyed bingo at Pine Brooke. She will be remembered for cheering on her children and grandchildren in their latest season of life, enjoying the entertainment of her great-grandchildren, and telling stories around the table with family. Her home was known to have an open door and was often a place of gathering. These cherished memories will be remembered fondly by family and friends.

Romayne is survived by her children, Kathy (Greg) Pieters and Donald (Diane) Degen; grandchildren, Sarah (Matt) Steele, Ashley (Aaron) Schramm, Kyle (Kelsey) Pieters, Eric (Becca) Pieters, Kristen (Dave) Pichler and Brian Degen; eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons Robert and Jeffrey Degen; and brothers Charles, Stanley and Thomas Lois.

The family would like to thank Pine Brook Pointe for their care during this time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church.
