The community in Burlington seems to be misinformed somehow regarding the movements and the protesting of WeVote Burlington. So I would like to take the time to set the record straight.
1. The WeVote mission statement endorses limited government while promoting personal liberty; demands responsibility and accountability of political office holders; constructs a plan of action to inform voters to get out the vote; and encourages conservative fiscal legislation.
We have always promoted cutting costs in our community, and sought accountability on how and where local government is spending our money, as can be seen in the 13 cost-saving tips we provided the School Board this fall.
2. We are following our First Amendment rights in the way of peaceful assembly. Last fall I started the Burlington Counter Protest in correlation with WeVote Burlington. We started out as a small protest to the Recall Walker folks, and blossomed into a sizeable traffic stopper with our Walker signs, School Board candidate meet and greet, and various petitions. We have always promoted peaceable protesting, in order to hold people accountable and spread the good news that our group promotes.
We feel the article in last week’s paper unfairly portrayed WeVote as anti-small business. WeVote encourages conversation and discussion of those tough questions that make people uncomfortable.
WeVote in NO WAY endorses the boycott of the local shops/businesses in our community, but we will not stifle conversation that produces ideas and thoughts. WeVote encourages those conversations so new ideas and thoughts can be brought to life.
If the people in the Plaza Theater had taken the time to look at the signs that were being held they would have seen a “get out the vote” sign that said “Vote Walker/Weix Tuesday.” The fact is that there was no one holding a “Boycott the Plaza Theater” sign. Therefore the person, who relayed the information to the newspaper, was giving false information in an attempt to twist the story.
