After helping lead the Burlington High School girls’ volleyball team to its first-ever state volleyball championship in November, the postseason awards started rolling in for BHS junior Kaysie Shebeneck.
The latest came on Wednesday, when Shebeneck was named the Gatorade Wisconsin Volleyball Player of the Year. By winning the state award, Shebeneck is eligible for the national Player of the Year award as well.
Shebeneck was the first winner in BHS history – and in fact, one of the first two nominees. Both she and fellow junior Ciara Capezio were nominated for the award. BHS co-head coach Dan Lynch said he found out Tuesday evening that one of the two had won, but didn’t know which until the press release went out Wednesday morning.
“It’s great for Kaysie,” Lynch said. “Kaysie’s very proud. Kaysie worked very hard for it.”
Other recent Wisconsin winners include Crystal Graff – a two-year winner from Madison La Follette who now plays for Wisconsin – and Catholic Central High School graduate Carol Henney in 2008.
Henney helped the Marquette women’s volleyball team to the NCAA tournament this year.
