Male Athlete of the Week
Brandt Gavin, Burlington High School wrestling: Tasked with starting off Dec. 22’s dual meet at Elkhorn, and the senior did it the right way.
Gavin earned a pin at 160 pounds in the opening match of the evening, and the Demons went on to down Elkhorn 43-34.
Gavin pinned Devin Kinney of Elkhorn in three minutes, 19 seconds. Gavin is currently ranked sixth in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online rankings at 152 pounds in Division 1 – one of seven ranked Burlington wrestlers.
Also considered: Ben Hornickle, Burlington High School wrestling.
Female Athlete of the Week
Megan Lee, Union Grove Union High School girls’ basketball: Lee, one of the few returning starters this year for the Bronco girls, set a single-game rebounding record in a 71-65 loss to Racine Park Dec. 22.
Lee recorded 20 rebounds. At just 5 feet, 6 inches, UG coach Rob Domagalski called the effort “all hustle.”
Lee is averaging 6.4 points per game, but 6.6 rebounds per game – in large part because of the Park effort. Union Grove is 3-4 overall.
Also considered: Alyssa Helwig, Waterford Union High School girls’ basketball.
Team of the Week
Union Grove Union High School boys’ basketball: The Bronco boys have been one of the surprises of the season so far, starting off undefeated and working their way to a 6-2 overall record and 4-1 in the Southern Lakes Conference before the holiday break.
On Dec. 22, the Broncos earned a share of the SLC by defeating Elkhorn 55-44 on the same night the Burlington High School boys lost at Badger.
The Broncos have been led in scoring by senior Brett Van Vreede, but also have a balanced attack. In the game against Elkhorn, Matt Wolff led the way with 13 points, followed by Grayson Catania with 11, Brad Ostrowski and Matt Herndon with 10 and Van Vreede with nine.
Unlike most of their opposition, the Broncos are now off until Jan. 10, when they will travel to Racine Lutheran for a non-conference contest at 7 p.m.
Romo Watch
The Dallas Cowboys have a simple proposition Sunday night – win and they are in the playoffs; lose and they are out.
The Cowboys may even have quarterback and Burlington High School graduate Tony Romo for the game. Romo bruised his throwing hand on the Cowboys’ first series against the Philadelphia Eagles Dec. 24, leaving the game and not returning.
The Cowboys lost the game 20-7. Romo did not get a chance to complete a pass in the game, throwing just two.
Number of the Week
4 – The number of days area athletes actually had off for their holiday break. The final games before Christmas were played on Dec. 22, with games resuming on Dec. 27. Most basketball teams were scheduled to play in holiday tournaments this week.
