Standouts for the Week of Oct. 28, 2011

Male Athlete of the Week

Rayce Wadsworth

Rayce Wadsworth, Catholic Central High School football: A senior, Wadsworth had one of his best games in a Hilltopper uniform Saturday in Catholic Central’s 45-12 win over Randolph in a Level One WIAA Division 7 playoff game.

Wadsworth rushed for 122 yards on nine carries, and also had one pass reception for 22 yards – and that one reception was for a second quarter touchdown.

He also rushed for a pair of scores, and anchored the ’Toppers defense from his linebacker position.

Also considered: Zach Fisher, Waterford Union High School football.

Female Athlete of the Week

Jo Wilks

Jo Wilks, Union Grove Union High School volleyball: When fellow senior Bailey Johnson went down injured in Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 regional final at Union Grove against Oak Creek, the Broncos needed to step up.

And Wilks, as she has been her entire career, was there. The senior setter, who is headed to Furman next year on a full-ride scholarship, was steady all night for Union Grove. The senior finished with seven kills on eight attempts, and had 47 assists in the Broncos’ 25-20, 34-32, 18-25, 25-17 win over the Knights.

She also had 13 digs and a service ace in the win.

Also considered: Megan Wadsworth, Catholic Central High School volleyball; Sara Wanasek, Burlington co-op swim team.

Team of the Week

Waterford Union High School football: The Wolverines routed Greenfield in a WIAA Level One game at home last week, 42-7.

Quarterback Zach Fisher passed for 215 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the game, and Waterford’s rushers picked up another three touchdowns – two from Jordan Underly and one from Greg Steffens.

Matt Briggs also picked off Greenfield quarterback Tyler Laverdure and ran the interception back 32 yards for a touchdown.

Also considered: Burlington High School girls’ volleyball.

Romo watch

Burlington High School graduate and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo helped lead the Cowboys to a 34-7 win over the St. Louis Rams Sunday.

Romo connected on 14 of 24 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He had no interceptions and a quarterback rating of 107.3. He didn’t have to throw as much because while the Cowboys’ rushing game has been anemic, it picked up 294 yards in the win over the Rams.

Also, according to various media reports, Romo and his new wife, Candice Crawford, are expecting their first child. No due date has been revealed.

Game of the Week

Just two area teams made the WIAA football playoffs, and both are alive in Level Two games this week.

Waterford Union High School, with its only loss being to Wilmot in Week Three, will travel to Wilmot Friday for a rematch at 7 p.m.

Wilmot, along with Waterford and Lake Geneva Badger, tied for the Southern Lakes Conference crown with 6-1 records. The Badgers beat Wilmot, Wilmot beat the Wolverines and the Wolverines beat Badger.

Catholic Central, meanwhile, is coming off an upset of top-seeded Randolph last week, and will host Black Hawk Saturday at 2 p.m.

Black Hawk upended No. 4 seed Rio last week, and is 8-2 overall. CCHS is 6-4.

WIAA sectional volleyball finals will be Saturday. Among the area teams still in contention are Burlington and Catholic Central. If the Demons win the sectional semifinals, they will host the final Saturday at 7 p.m.

If Catholic Central wins its semifinal, they will travel to Lake Country Lutheran for the sectional final Saturday at 7 p.m.
